An excerpt from -THE LAST CHECKPOINT

Right now I needed to finish a job for a client. The romance novel cover photos I shot for a publisher last Thursday needed changes. The client wanted the female model to have green eyes, so I made her eyes green. Longer hair, no problem. I can adjust the lighting with Photoshop and of course they always want me to change the model’s cup size - up. 

For this latest Steampunk themed cover shot, I posed the beautiful young Victorian woman in the arms of what I’d call a hunky geek. In one of his hands I’d placed a LeMat revolver and in the other, a swooning Lori Armbruster. My raven-haired female model wore a riveted leather and velvet corset over several diaphanous silk petticoats. André, the muscular, blonde male model was dressed in an Australian Bush Coat, opened at the chest of course, with no shirt underneath. A pair of brass rimmed goggles were pushed up on his forehead. I had my makeup artist add a little grime on both their faces since this was set in the age of steam engines. I’d shot it on a green screen so the publisher’s graphics people could drop them into a photo composite background illustration for the book cover. That was all great, except now they didn’t want the woman’s face to be grimy, so I had to electronically touch up her complexion because they’re too cheap to pay for a reshoot. I love my job!

This hurts his professional reputation, and cramps his dating efforts with the women in his building.  An assortment of friends and neighbors try to help him with his circumstances, but cause more problems in the process.

Another peek inside "The Naked Groom" 2/11/2012

"Wait a minute." I stepped back, "Did you come all the way over here because you had an argument with your Dado?  I can see you're hurting right now, Tiffany."

"I'm just so mad at him right now.  Would you mind if I stay here tonight?"

 "I've got shampoo in my eyes.  Can you wait here while I rinse it off in the shower?"

I had to work at the Cafe tomorrow and Saturday was another stint at the studio.  If I could get her to go home tonight, I'd make it to work at the cafe, and Sophia's for another modeling session.  If Tiffany didn't leave, it would to be impossible to call Sophia ahead of time without blowing my cover. 

I dried off and put on my terrycloth robe.  Tiffany was curled up on my sofa crying into one of the cushions.  I took this opportunity and brewed some chamomile tea to calm her down. 

"By the way," She called from the living room, "Where's Leadbutt?" she'd composed herself when I mentioned taking her out to eat.  She'd propped herself up and drank her tea.

"His name's Lardass.  Remember, I took him to my mother's.  She's going to keep him for a while?"

We sat at the kitchen table, where she finished her tea.

"Tell me what your dad did to make you so mad."

"He told me you sleep with your dog and golf like a girl, ...and he doesn't think I should marry you.  He thinks because you have long hair, you must be secretly gay or at the very least, bisexual.  He says you're not one of our kind... he thinks you're a bad influence."

"He just doesn't know me yet, and I can't help the way I play golf."

Local Writer’s debut novel makes Top Ten Romantic Comedies Shop for Kindle

Will Zeilinger’s debut novel THE NAKED GROOM surprised the Signal Hill resident when it appeared on “Top Ten Romantic Comedies Shop.com”, part of the Kindle Store at Amazon.com.

Just released in August, THE NAKED GROOM is a romantic comedy told from the man’s point-of-view and has already attracted a small following.

Here is a short summary:

    Aspiring chef, Richard Grainger, in love with sexy Tiffany Stonebridge, maxes out his plastic on an engagement ring that would light up the night sky and promises her a honeymoon in Tahiti. 

    With no way to pay for it, he secretly takes a second job as an artist's model.

   Things get complicated when he meets Clarise, another model…a naked one. Their friendship goes from zero to bed in a blink.

    While battling his feelings for both women, he gets stuck babysitting a friend’s big dog and gets in trouble with Tiffany’s rich father who thinks he’s babysitting another woman. Richard has cooked up trouble for himself with no way to fix it.

Some more about me - the author

Writing fiction is not easy - but it is fun. I get to make up stories from thin air or tell stories I've had in my heart and mind for years. Then I get to share them with you.

Over time, I've created a line of clipart for Commodore 64/128 computers and PC, a couple of cartoon strips for local newspapers and magazines, and together with my wife, created and sold a line of humorous greeting cards all over the United States and in Europe.   Through dumb luck, I didn't offend anyone (too much). We did get into a couple of dozen newspapers including USA Today and did TV interviews in California and Florida.  The greeting cards lasted about 4 years, the clipart about 6 years and we were ready to move on to something else.

My first 2 E-novels are "THE NAKED GROOM" a romantic comedy written from the guy's point of view and "SOMETHING'S COOKING AT DOVE ACRES" a young adult novel with mysterious goings on.

Watch for my next two books tentatively titled "DOWNSHIFTING" a humorous mystery story involving sports car rallies.  Next comes "INSINCERE" a romantic comedy about a young woman who thinks she can create a bullet-proof life plan for herself and a yet-to-be-named mate.

In the next couple of years - a book about a young boy's adventures in an exotic country as the child of a civilian contractor.
